Concept Art for Movies

General / 19 January 2021

Okay, first blog post!

I recently enrolled in the Concept Art for Movies class with (the surely now legendary) Jama Jurabaev.

If you aren't yet familiar with Jama's work, definitely check out his Artstation and Gumroad pages. He's worked on some really big movies and is incredibly knowledgeable in concept art and cinema. But honestly, I think the best thing about him is that he comes across as a really affable, open and relatable guy who wants to share his knowledge. He has this boundless enthusiasm for his craft which really comes across if you watch any of his videos.

I think it's for that last reason that I signed up for this relatively expensive ($999 + VAT - ouch!) course, so I'm determined to learn as much as possible.

The beginner class I'm in is for a total of 5 weeks and covers:

  • film industry pipeline
  • cinematic composition
  • asset creation, characters
  • props and vehicles

Week 5 is for our final presentation. Seems like a way off now but I'm sure it'll go past way too quickly...

As yet there's not much to show, as I'm busy collecting and arranging reference for the project brief - 'Waterworld'.

I've enclosed some of the images I've collected so far and hopefully as the weeks go on I'll be able to share something more interesting!

In the meantime, if anyone has any questions I'll do my best to answer.

cheers

Paul
